Ford recalls 1 million more cars for exploding air bags

Air bags are supposed to make you safer. They're not supposed to explode and shoot metal shrapnel through your vehicle like a tiny bomb. The problem is, many Ford vehicles are equipped with defective Takata air bag inflators that are in danger of doing exactly that. Ford Motor Co. has already recalled millions of vehicles for this problem during the last several years, and recently, the company announced it will recall 953,000 more.

The problem relates to the ammonium nitrate in the air bag inflators that creates the explosion that triggers the rapid inflation. However, when this chemical is exposed to hot and humid temperatures for an extended period of time, it can result in the deterioration of the inflation system. Ultimately, the explosion becomes too forceful and the metal container that "contains" the explosion blows apart.

The result? Metal fragments shoot through the passenger compartment of the vehicle like tiny bullets. Twenty-three people have already died from these air bags. It's possible that more have died that weren't reported, and it's possible that future drivers and passengers will die.

The most recent Ford recall related to Takata air bags includes the 2010 Ford Edge, the 2010 Lincoln MKX, the 2010 - 2011 Ford Ranger, the 2010 to 2012 Ford Fusion, the 2010 to 2012 Lincoln MKZ, the 2010 to 2011 Mercury Milan and the 2010 to 2014 Ford Mustang.

If you or a family member were hurt in an accident involving a problematic air bag -- regardless of whether it was a Ford-made vehicle or not -- you might want to learn more about the Takata air bag scandal while exploring your legal rights and options.
