5 things to do if you slip and fall in a store

When you go shopping at a store, you expect to be safe. Unfortunately, not every retail establishment is free of hazards. Certain conditions and circumstances may lead you to slip and fall. According to the National Safety Council, approximately 9.2 million individuals received emergency room treatment for fall injuries in 2016

Slip and fall accidents usually occur in stores because of spills, dangerous flooring materials, uneven surfaces, clutter or poor lighting. If you experience a fall while shopping, here are some steps you should take to protect yourself.

1. Seek medical help

Your wellbeing is the number one priority. If you have severe injuries, you may need to call an ambulance or go to the emergency room. Otherwise, you may simply want to set up an appointment with your primary physician or an urgent care facility. In addition to helping you recover from your injuries, medical documentation is helpful if you decide to pursue compensation for the accident.

2. Report the incident

Make sure you notify the manager or owner about the accident. Request for this person to create a written report and ask for a copy. This report is vital for proving the details of the slip and fall and getting money to cover your injuries.

3. Document as much as possible

Take photographs of the location of the accident, including any unsafe conditions that caused you to fall. Write down the time and date of the accident. Collect the names and contact information of anyone who witnessed the accident. Witnesses can corroborate your claims and help you get the compensation you deserve.

4. Do not give statements

After you give the basic details of the accident to the store for a written report, keep your communication limited. Be careful of giving more statements and posting anything on your social media profiles.

5. Consider legal action

The owner or manager of the store may be liable for your injuries. You may be able to get paid for your medical bills and other expenses if you can prove negligence.
