Tragic stats about kids and car accidents while backing up

Ask any auto expert, and they’ll tell you that one of the most dangerous things anyone can do in their car is to drive in reverse. We do it all the time, but usually just for a few seconds at a time. That means most people have very little experience, even though backing up is far harder than driving forward.

The biggest issue is just a lack of visibility. People often back into places where they can’t see completely. Mistakes are easy to make. Backup cameras, now standard equipment on a lot of vehicles, have made this a bit better, but it’s still a problem.

It’s especially an issue with children, who, with their small size, fit right into those blind spots. Here are a few stats that show just how dangerous this can be:

  • A minimum of 50 children gets hit by cars that are backing up every single week in the United States. That’s one child per state, per week.
  • Most of these kids are just 1 year old at the time of the incident, or between 12 months old and 23 months old.
  • About 60% of these cases involve rather large vehicles, which are harder to back up than small cars. These are large SUVs, vans and trucks — three of the most popular vehicle types in the country.

Accidents can happen on sidewalks, in driveways, at school or in the parking lot at the store. If your child suffers serious injuries, they could result in high medical bills and life-altering physical damage. Make sure you know what rights you have to compensation.
