To work correctly, a motorcycle helmet must fit properly

When looking for a new motorcycle helmet, you spend your time thinking about the way that it looks. What color do you like? What decals make it stand out? What style looks the coolest as you cruise down the street?

If this sounds absurd to you, you’re already on the right track, but the problem is that a lot of people do think this way. Instead, they should be thinking about the way that it fits.

As one helmet expert noted, if a distracted teenage driver hits you while you’re on your motorcycle, you’re better off to have a cheap helmet that has actually been properly fitted to your head than a replica racing helmet that looks awesome and that cost $600, even though it doesn’t fit and “rattles around on your head.”

A helmet that does not fit can come completely off in a violent crash. It could twist around sideways on your head. It could come partially off and not offer full protection. Even if it stays on, your head could slam into the inside of the helmet after the helmet hits the ground, injuring you inside of the shell.

People often assume that paying more means you get a safer, better helmet. The real key is to find a helmet that fits, no matter how much it costs. That’s how you stay safe and avoid serious injuries.

Of course, no matter what helmet you’re wearing, you could still get badly injured in an accident with a car. Make sure you know how to seek financial compensation if this happens to you.
