How likely is your car to roll?

You have to think about a lot of different safety issues when buying a new or used car. You probably consider tech options, like lane-departure warning systems and airbags. You probably consider the sheer size of the vehicle and how well it will fair when colliding with a different car or truck on the road.

One thing you need to make sure you don't overlook -- many people do -- is the chance that your vehicle will roll. Certainly, not all vehicles are made equal in this regard. It's a far greater risk in some than others. Which are the most dangerous? Here are just a few from a recent study:

  • The Nissan NV3500, with a 30.6% rollover chance and a two-star safety rating.
  • The Jeep Wrangler, with a 27.9% chance of rolling.
  • The Toyota 4Runner, with a 24.6% rollover chance.
  • The Cadillac Escalade, with rollover odds clocking in at 22.9%.
  • The Chevrolet Colorado, with a 20% chance of a rollover accident.

It should be noted that all of the vehicles listed above were for the 2017 model year.

One thing you can clearly see from these results, though, is that large vehicles -- mostly SUVs -- have the greatest rollover odds. They tend to have a high stance that is great for off-road needs, but which means they have a high center of gravity on the road. This makes them more top-heavy than sedans, coupes, convertibles and other small vehicles that sit close to the pavement.

No matter what you drive, if you get hurt in an accident caused by someone else, you may have a right to financial compensation.
