Your attitude matters with safe motorcycle riding

One of the best things any new motorcyclist can learn is that they need to have the right mindset and attitude to become a safe rider. You can think about safety systems and tools -- everything from ABS braking systems to advanced motorcycle helmets -- but the wrong mindset can still put you at risk.

For instance, experts note that you need to be self-disciplined. You need to work hard at learning this new skill and practicing what you learn. Do not assume that you can just jump on the bike and ride perfectly your first time out. True safety comes when you master all of the little steps in the right order.

You also need to make sure you are open to teaching and advice. Do not assume you know it all from day one. Working with instructors and other experienced riders is a great way to get safer and more experienced yourself.

Once you're on the road, you need to have good reactionary skills and good judgment. You need to make snap decisions when you ride and you need to react to things that you don't expect. Your ability to think quickly and clearly under pressure can save your life.

You also need to be honest about how to ride a bike safely. Don't do tricks. Don't break the speed limit. Don't assume that riding is all about pushing those boundaries.

Even with the right mindset, you can still get injured when someone else makes a mistake. You need to know if you have a right to financial compensation.
