A pedestrian dies every 88 minutes

It’s all too easy to think of car accidents as something that happens to other people, and that makes them feel less common — like less of a threat than they really are. When you break down the statistics, though, it can really bring home the level of risk that you actually face.

For instance, how much time do you spend walking near traffic? Maybe you enjoy jogging to stay in shape without a gym membership. Maybe you just take your dog for a walk every day.

Regardless, every minute that you spend near the road puts you at risk. In the United States, a pedestrian dies in a car accident every 88 minutes. That’s just under an hour and a half. Every day, more than 16 people are killed in these accidents. If you run the stats out to every week, that’s 115 lives lost.

And those statistics from the government’s own data only relate to fatal accidents. Many people get hit, suffer serious injuries, and live through them. They can still see life-changing issues — traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and much more. In that sense, even the fatality statistics, as bleak as they may appear, do not tell the whole story. The level of risk that you actually face when you’re near traffic is astronomical, and everyone needs to be aware of that when running, walking, jogging, or anything else.

If you get injured in a pedestrian accident this year, make sure you are well aware of the legal options you have to seek out financial compensation for your costs.
